Toyota Most Eco-Friendly Automaker

Toyota Most Eco-Friendly Automaker
Toyota Prius
Ever wonder who held the title of most eco-friendly automaker? Toyota and Honda were rumored to be the greenest automakers, but it wasn't clear who held the title, until now.

According to a recent report by Business Car in the UK, the title of World's Greenest Automaker belongs to Toyota.

In a press release, Business Car says, "Toyota has retained its position as greenest vehicle manufacturer according to a study conducted by Business Car magazine. For the second year running, the top 20 fleet manufacturers were rated and ranked based on survey results and other research by Clean Green Cars (www.cleangreencars.co.uk) on the various attributes and achievements of each brand. Scores were weighted to allow for sales volume to give a true comparison of large and small brands. Toyota was top-rated with a score of 86 per cent."

They go onto say, "Toyota has achieved its leading green status thanks to industry leading hybrid applications – most famously the Prius – and also environmentally considerate manufacturing and recycling. The company is also on target to achieve its goal of whole-fleet CO2 emissions of 140g/km this year. The introduction of Toyota Optimal Drive, a range of powertrain design and engineering features that increase output, while significantly improving emissions performance and fuel efficiency, gives almost every Toyota model a green edge over its rivals."

Irv’s Sheet: Prius Plug-In MPG Not Yet Available
You may have read a recent headline and story in Automotive News that suggested a Toyota spokesperson said that our U.S. plug-in hybrid (PHV) test vehicles have achieved, on average, about 65 mpg in testing. The interview took place at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit last month.

We believe there was a misunderstanding between the reporter and the spokesperson, who were also discussing Prius vehicles that had been converted to plug-ins by aftermarket companies and are currently being tested by private individuals, companies, utilities and so on. Many of these owners of converted PHVs have stated or publicly posted performance numbers in the 65 mpg range.

For the record, Toyota has only a small test fleet of PHVs in the U.S. and has never offered mileage estimates on PHV technology. These PHVs are being used for auto show displays, brief demonstrations and university studies. They are very early "converted" prototypes using double nickel-metal hydride batteries.

Although mileage data has been collected during demonstration events, it varies too widely to offer any indication of what to expect consistently. Most importantly, these vehicles are not representative of the lithium-ion-battery-powered next-generation Prius PHVs that will be delivered to lease-fleet customers later this year.

When asked about the mpg performance of PHVs – either lithium or nickel battery powered – we have consistently answered that we believe that PHV mileage will vary dramatically, depending on driving style and driving conditions . . . even more dramatically than with a conventional gas-electric hybrid. This is due to the added weight of a large battery that, once depleted by pure-electric drive, will contribute nothing until it is plugged in and re-charged.

We have also stated that it is too early to discuss anticipated mileage ranges based on early preliminary testing in Japan by Toyota Motor Corporation engineers.

We look forward to getting in-use driving feedback from the 150 lease-fleet customers who will receive our lithium battery-powered Prius PHVs early next year. We anticipate a wide range of fuel efficiency performance numbers. And we regret the misunderstanding that prompted this recent news story.

UMW Toyota To Launch Eco-Car By 2nd Half

SHAH ALAM, April 8 (Bernama) -- UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd will launch its latest eco-car, the Toyota Prius by the second half of this year, as part of its commitment to be at the forefront of environment technology in the automotive industry.

The Eco-car is a hybrid synergy drive vehicle which is environmental friendly.

UMW Toyota executive director of strategic marketing group Aminar Rashid Salleh said today that the company has positioned the environment as a priority management issue.

"We want to become a leading company that contributes to the development of a recycling-based society through innovative environmental technologies," he told reporters at the launch of the Toyota Eco Youth 2009 Programme (TEY), here.

He said over the years Toyota had developed various types of hybrid vehicles including fuel cells and electric vehicles with the aim of introducing an ultimate eco-car in the future.

Earlier, Aminar said the TEY programme was expected to cultivate environmental awareness among the youth in schools, as preserving the environment was everyone's responsibility.

The programme had the participation of 16 schools nationwide in requiring students to conduct environment projects in their schools.

The programme was started nine years ago and has become an integral part of UMW Toyota's corporate culture since its establishment in 1982.
